10 Things To Do In Cox's Bazar Beyond The Beach

Marine drive, Himchari falls, fish markets at dawn — the side of Cox's Bazar most visitors miss.

10 Things To Do In Cox's Bazar Beyond The Beach

Everyone knows the headline: 120 kilometres of unbroken sand, the longest natural sea beach on earth. What most visitors never see is how much of Cox's Bazar happens away from the main beach crowds. Here is the list our guides give friends.

Start with the Marine Drive at sunrise. The road to Teknaf hugs the sea on one side and green hills on the other, and in the early light it is nearly empty. Stop at Himchari on the way — the waterfall is modest, but the hilltop viewpoint above it is one of the best on the coast.

By 6 a.m. the fish market near the jetty is in full swing. Boats unload hilsa, pomfret and prawns while buyers shout prices; it is noisy, wet and completely wonderful. Breakfast afterwards on hot paratha and dal at a local hotel costs almost nothing.

Take a boat to Moheshkhali Island for the Adinath Temple and the quiet mangrove creeks, then be back for sunset at Inani Beach, where coral boulders turn gold in the evening light and the crowds thin out. Ramu's Buddhist temples and the hundred-foot reclining Buddha make an easy half-day trip inland, and the handicraft shops there sell genuine local work.

Eat one seafood dinner properly: grilled rupchanda or a whole crab at a beachside restaurant, ordered by weight and cooked while you wait. And if your trip falls between November and February, the dawn sea is calm enough for a genuinely pleasant swim before breakfast.

Cox's Bazar rewards travellers who set an alarm. The beach will still be there at noon — everything on this list is better before it.
